Hiking and multi-day treks on Mount Mulanje
Mount Mulanje is one of Southern Africa’s most rewarding hiking destinations. The massif offers a vast granite plateau, dramatic peaks, waterfalls, forested valleys and wide-open views — combined with a network of 10 publicly accessible mountain huts spread across the plateau.
While day hikes are possible, Mount Mulanje is best experienced as a multi-day trek. We strongly recommend spending at least two days and one night on the mountain. If time allows, staying two or three nights gives you the chance to explore more remote areas and enjoy the mountain at a relaxed pace. For those aiming to climb Mount Sapitwa (3,002 m) — Malawi’s highest peak — a minimum of two nights on the mountain is recommended.
Starting points & access
Older guidebooks often mention Likhubula as the main starting point, but in reality Mount Mulanje has around 15 established access paths leading from surrounding villages up to the plateau. Hikes can start from villages such as Tutchila, Likhubula, Chitakale and Mulanje.
For most routes, having nearby facilities and easy access to public transport, we recommend starting from:
- Mount Mulanje Information Centre (Chitakale)
- Kara O’mula Hotel (Mulanje)
